SAINT SEBASTIAN

died 288

A Roman legionnaire, chief of the Guard under the Emperor Diocletian. He was a clandestine Christian. Arrested for 'seditious' speeches, he was led to a field, tied to a pole and shot with arrows, but was miraculously saved – the wounds were not fatal. He appeared before the Emperor once more, proving his faith, and was stoned. The young man was depicted tied to a pole and pierced with arrows.

Attributes: arrow.
