ERHARD SCHÖN
Circa 1491 – 1542
Germany
A painter, engraver, graphic artist
He lived and worked in Nuremberg. His biography is almost unknown. His name is mentioned in Nuremberg documents in 1515 on the occasion of payment of accounts. In 1532, he made a design of a fountain in Trento for the cardinal Bernardo Clesio. In 1540, his wife died.
It is well known that during a long time Schoen worked under the guidance of Hans Springinklee, whose influence is evident in his woodcuts made in 1520s. In 1520s he probably started to work as illustrator for publishing houses. In 1530s his compositions became more independent. In 1540s he made woodcuts in the style of folk images. Around 1200 woodcuts are ascribed to Schoen.
