HERCULES AT THE CROSSROADS (THE EFFECTS OF JEALOUSY)
The name Hercules at the Crossroads was suggested by Erwin Panofsky. It is an unusual image of fighting between the Lust and the Virtue for control over Hercules. Two female figures embody the Virtue and the Vice. On the background there are two trees: the tree of the Virtue is covered with leaves, the one of the Vice is dried up. The satyr's head is adorned with the vine, but Hercules is crowned with the laurel. The hero chose the Virtue.
